The Miami-Dade Police Department’s (MDPD), Traffic Homicide Unit, is investigating a crash involving a MDPD marked police vehicle.
According to investigators, a stolen vehicle alert was received from a license plate reader in the area of NW 79th Street and NW 17th Avenue. Northside District officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the alert. Officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but the driver refused and fled. As the Officers maintained a visual on the vehicle, aviation was requested to assist. A two-man unit immediately responded to assist and activated their emergency equipment in order to expedite their response. As they approached the intersection of NW 103rd Street and NW 17th Avenue, the police vehicle crashed into a pick-up truck. The officers’ vehicle was redirected and struck two other vehicles that were stopped at the same intersection.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and transported two MDPD officers to Ryder Trauma Center. One officer sustained injuries to his lower extremities. The second officer was transported for minor injuries and received a medical evaluation. Two of the other drivers were treated and released on the scene and a third driver was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.
The occupants of the stolen vehicle, fled on foot in the area of NW 120th Street and NW 20th Avenue. A perimeter was immediately established and three subjects were taken into custody. A firearm was also recovered.
